My Story
How Curves has helped me with Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. The bodys own defense system attacks myelin; the fatty substance that surrounds and protects the nerve fibers. The damaged myelin forms scar tissue (sclerosis), which gives the disease its name. When any part of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses traveling to and from the brain and spinal cord are distorted or interrupted. So how do you stop this progression?
As of right now there is no 100% cure for Multiple Sclerosis and each person will react differently to the medication/treatment. I have used the combination of trial medication and Curves to manage my illness. Curves has helped me increase my overall fitness, energy, flexibility, and strength. While also targeting my daily diet and educating me on proper nutritional choices. My MS doctor attributes all my success with the illness to Curves as well.
I was recently sick with a life-threatening illness called Sepsis. My bodys response to a bacterial bladder infection caused Sepsis. Then my immune system went into overdrive, overwhelming normal processes in my blood. The result was that small blood clots formed, blocking blood flow to my vital organs; this lead to an organ failure that started in my kidneys and spread. I spent four days in the intensive care unit in Rochester getting antibiotics and fluids to prevent my blood pressure from falling to low. My doctor at Mayo Clinic said if I had not been so active at Curves I would have probably not had the strength to make it through the infection. One out of three individuals infected with Sepsis die. I was also told during my recovery that I was going to need a walker to aid me with stability, but because of the strength that I had built up in the past two years of Curves I was able to quickly discard my walker.
Curves has not only helped me physically but it has also helped me mentally. I have been able to maintain a level of mobility and strength to do the things that I otherwise would be limited. Plus Curves has been a wonderful addition and specifically target my personal needs. I am totally dedicated at coming 3Xs a week. Curves has saved my life!
