My Story

With very little notice, my life took a 180 degree turn in June 1999 from being a very healthy person with basically good life habits to the worst prognosis of colon cancer labeled - stage 4 metestatic cancer. My doctor said once during an annual physical that "I was his healthiest patient". Having had annual physicals for the 20 preceding years, there were no medical issue alerts and no family history of cancer. But, it happened.

After major surgery, a two and a half week hospital stay and seven months of chemotheropy I was declared visibly cancer free. Now I had to stay that way. Colon cancer survivors never get an all cured diagnosis.

As I considered what was needed back into my life, the answer was EXERCISE.

I am a Physical Education major who had enjoyed participating in many different sports for the first half of my life. The second half was on a different track.

Looking to get back into the teaching field again after out children were in school, I had the opportunity to open my own business - a Driving School. Over the next 20 years my school never stopped growing. Along with that, I sat in my car or at a desk giving up my personal time for that of client and business needs.

I tried a couple different athletic club programs but I couldn't attend set class times on set days of the week.
My clients had very different availablity times and I had to work around their schedules. Every day was different.

In 1998 a CURVES opened in Eau Claire. I finished my chemo treatments in April 2000 and joined Curves a month later. I have been a faithful member since then. Next, I cut my work time by 75% to allow personal time and healing.

CURVES works for me! To come and go on my schedule and to complete a full workout in 30 min. is great. I probably average five times each week.

I truly credit my continuous use of this CURVES facility with keeping me healthy and ALIVE. June 23, 2009 was my 10th cancer free anniversary.

I, also, enjoy time with the friends and staff I've met during these years.

Loving life with family - our four grandchildren have been born since this all began. We also travel the world. At first, I didn't think any of this would be possible. It's GREAT.
