My Story
My battle against obesity began at the age of telve. At my middle school physical, I weighed over 200 pounds. My pediatrician was concerned and told my mother that I wouldn't live to see my high school graduation. I needed to diet immediately.
I had never lost weight in my life, so losing fourteen pounds with prescribed diet pills gave me hope. I began walking to and from school. Soon I dropped the diet pills.
I "simply" counted calories and walked. (This was before the day of fat grams, and a saccharin tablet was the only artificial sweetener.)
Five years later and 85 pounds lighter, I had a new life! Walking remained a favorite mode of transportation and exercise. I loved the results! My eating habits were much healthier. I was able to keep most of my 85 pounds off for the next three decades of my life.
Then on June 30, 2007, I joined Curves with because of two friends. I had been doing 30 minutes daily on the treadmill for several years. I had done exercise classes periodically throughout the years. My friends really enjoyed Curves, so I decided to give it a try.
Two weeks later, as a result of a colonoscopy, I was diagnosed with with colon cancer. I had had no symptoms. My family and I were stunned.
I had a colon surgery one week later. I began chemotherapy treatments a month later. I also went back to work. Because of consistent exercise, I was able to make a speedy recovery after major surgery. I was able to work during 12 treatments of chemotherapy. I was able to get back to Curves after my 12 chemotherapy treatments were completed. Curves has proven to be such an asset in my body recovery. I've steadily gotten stronger, and my muscle tone has returned.
Daily I still walk on the treadmill over thirty minutes. I go to Curves several times a week. Curves is like my vitamin or surge after a day of work. I exercise with more fervor than ever. It daily loads me with benefits. It relieves my stress and keeps me going. Curves has become a way of life for me. I enjoy the fellowship and fun there. Curves makes exercise fun. I laugh and live the benefits. Thank you, Curves!
