My Story
Here I was, 58 years old/young, obese, overweight - call it what you want, I was fat, out of shape, feeling sorry for myself and in the middle of a Labrador winter - enough said, it was "do or die".

I have osteoarthritis and osteoprosis, two total knee replacements, my neck, hip, knees and ankles were in costant pain and now spasms were also common place because of the arthritis and the doctors and specialists wanted me to exercise, exercise???? You have to be kidding, loose weight I can understand, but put more stress on my already overstressed and painful joints....Well, they must know what they are talking about, after all they were all singing the same song to me and I trust my doctors.

I have seen advertisements on TV, listened to some of my friends and seen buildings in my travels with the sign for Curves. Did I have the guts to try it????

I had already procrastionated for over a month, because I had promised myself that once the New Year came in I was going to start doing something for me to get healthier. Monday, February 2nd came and went, then came Wednesday, February 4th, today was the day!!!- I was sick to my stomach and did not have the nerve to go - I am very self-concious about my weight and the thought of someone else knowing how much I weighed was sickening. Along came nauseating Friday, February 6th - it was now or never - I got in my truck and headed for Curves. I crawled up the stairs and entered this room to my music - the 60's and 70's - it couldn't be that bad!! People were on these machines moving parts of their body to the beat of the music - it acutally looked like fun....I then met the leaders and explained my situation and my health problems. I was welcomed with open arms and after all the measurements and yes, my weight was taken, they took me around and showed me how to use the machines. Before I left appointments were set up for me with an instructor for Monday and Wednesday of the following week, I was on my way..

By Friday evening I could hardly move, every muscle in my body were aching, after all, they had been ignored for quite some time and were letting me know they were not pleased with me for having ignored them.

Four months later and with much support and encouragement from leaders and my new friends, my body and I are moving onward and upward. I have added a few more machines to my routine and do Curves Smart Program. I am and do feel healthier, more confident and have even purchased a swim suit and attend aqua fit.

This is only the beginning of the new, healthier me and I thank Curves and their wonderful leaders for the support and encouragement - one more thing, one day this lady came in and I have know her for years, she is in her 80's, so it goes to show it is a program that will keep us fit all our lives... don't put off going like I did, there is no time like the present. THANKS CURVES!!

"Norma, as best friends, I've seen how much you have struggled with your health issues over the years and how much you talked about doing something "just for me".It looks like Curves is really helping in both these areas. I'm really proud of you! Thanks for encouraging me to return to Curves. "
