My Story

Joined Curves 5/4/07 @ 366 pounds and a BMI of 55
Current Weight (as of 5/4/099): 163 (-203 lbs)
BMI: 24.8
Inches Lost: 141.5

I had been overweight my whole life. I have lost & gained hundreds of pounds throughout my life, and never been able to keep the weight off. For more than 20 years I was what they refer to as Morbidly Obese. I was laid off from my job, in banking, after 28 years in December 2006. At that point, I knew that I had to get serious about losing weight. I had been having issues with my breathing and my Blood Pressure was starting to increase. I had been sleeping with the CPAP machine for over 9 years; after being diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. My daughter was 9 years old and I was so afraid she would live her life without a mom. I started to look into the Gastric Bypass in April of 2007. During my research, I started to see a nutritionist and decided to start an exercise program. I had thought a friend of mine, Maggie Finn, worked at Curves, so I decided to make a call and find out about it.

I called Curves on May 1st and joined the Melville, NY Curves on May 4, 2007. I have not regretted this decision for one second. From May 4th, to September 3rd of 2007, I went to Curves 3 times a week. During that time, I lost 50 pounds and was feeling great. On September 4, 2007 I had the Gastric Bypass Surgery. Due to the fact that I had been working out for 4 months, the surgery was a breeze. I was up and walking the halls within hours after the surgery. I was able to move around with ease. After a month recuperation period, I went back to my regular 3 day a week workout at CURVES, and have been doing so ever since.

In May of 2008, I started CurvesSmart, the world's most advanced fitness technology. CurvesSmart is a workout customized to my progress and it motivates me to work to my best potential. All that means I get even better results. It is like having a personal training working by my side throughout the workout. At the end of each workout, I check my results on the computer and can see how well I did. The workouts have helped me get into shape and tone muscles I had forgotten or never knew existed. As the weight was and is coming off, the workouts and exercise really helped to build up muscle that is often lost during weight loss. Curves is constantly looking at their equipment and making changes and adjustments to make sure that we are all getting the best out of the 30 minute workout. For about 9 months now, I have been walking 3 times a week, also. I workout 3 days a week at Curves and walk 4 miles, 3 times a week.

Anytime I have a question or concern, the staff at Curves is there to address them. I often times speak with the owner (Robin Pliss) about specific areas I would like to work on and she is more than willing to take the time to show me ways to do so. Curves is a place where I feel right at home. There is a real positive feeling in the room, as the ladies go from machine to machine. We can chat and laugh together, as we all work towards being healthier. For me, Curves is another tool I am using to help me get to a
healthy weight. I knew the Gastric Bypass Surgery was not a cure, but also a tool. So, I strap on my tool belt each day and use the tools I have to continue on a path of good health and well being.

Each day, I discover something new that I am now able to do, because of my weight loss. I no longer have to be concerned about fitting into theatre seats, or booths at restaurants. I can bend down and tie my shoe. I can walk up stairs and not be out of breathe when I reach my desired floor. I am able to walk long distances without any pains in my knees or back. I no longer have Sleep Apnea and do not use a CPAP machine. I can fly on an airplane and not have to ask for the seatbelt extension. I was vacationing over the summer and went Parasailing, Jet skiing and boogie boarding. In June I took a trip to Philly with my daughters class and ran up the Rocky Steps. The kids were out of breathe and I was fine! I am participating in life rather than sitting on the sidelines as a spectator. I am now able to keep up with, and some times surpass, my 11 year old daughter. I no longer have to wear elastic waist pants. I now wear pants that have a snap or button and a flyno elastic! My clothing size, no longer has one or several Xs in it.

Not only am a most satisfied Curves member, I am a member with Curves in all the right places now!!!
