My Story
I am 41 years old and lost my job 6 months ago. I've been unemployed before, a month here and there, but never half a year.

While I've been sitting in front of my computer for much of the days searching for jobs and speaking with agencies, I noticed I suddenly had love-handles. At 5'3" and always weighing about 120 pounds, I was even more disheartened when I tried on a dress I've had for many years for an interview and found that it had gotten a bit tight in the hips. Being unemployed and having very limited finances, I had taken to walking 10,000 steps a day but as anyone who lives in NJ knows, most of June has been rainy so that stumped my progress.

This morning I joined Curves. It was a hard decision, only due to my finances, but I'm a smart woman so I thought of the pros and cons.

Having lost my health benefits, what better time is there to increase my endurance and fitness levels? As far as finding the money for it, I had gotten to the point where I smoking more than a pack of cigarettes a day being stressed while awaiting employment. That's more than the cost of joining Curves. How will I find the time? Being that the Curves circuit training is paced, I can get to my local one at 7 a.m., be back at home well before 9 a.m. and continue my job searching. What better way to start the day than by doing something that makes me feel better then taking the day on full speed?

There are a lot of reasons I could have come up with NOT to join today, but there are also many ways we can reallocate the time, money and energy we are spending in ways that do not benefit us into ways that do. I couldn't be more pleased with the commitment I made to day to get back into shape and maintain the body I love!

"Kudos to you Patricia. I too am recently unemployed, but with a hitch, I became temporarily disabled 3 weeks prior to my termination, so I have not yet started to collect unemployment benefits, nor have I actively begun employment searching, as I am awaiting much needed surgery. However, all of that aside, I am acquiring "love handles" that I really don't want, having loss more than 120 pounds over the past 2 years, and I desperately don't want to put that weight back on my body. I am 53 years old, 5 feet and 1/2 inches tall, and I use walking as my main source of exercise, given my current health condition. I have been contemplating joining Curves for quite some time, and just reading your story has given me that final push to go forward with making the commitment. I'm currently 120 pounds, which is by BMI standards is a healthy weight, but I felt better in my skin so to speak, when I was between 100 and 105. So that is my goal to get back to that weight range and maintain it. I'm so happy I had the opportunity to read your story, it was the final push I needed to "do the right thing". Thank you for sharing."
